What is the dinging sound that Trail Boss sometimes makes?

Trail Boss emits an alert sound in 5 cases:

1. An alert is sounded when the GPS accuracy falls below Trail Boss's minimum acceptable value. You can silence this alert for 10 minutes by tapping the red warning message at the top of the Map page. Each successive tap adds another 10 minutes of silence.

2. An alert is sounded when the trip clock starts counting. Trail Boss delays starting the trip clock until you travel a short distance from the trip start location. Trail Boss emits an alert to let you know when the clock has been started.

3. An alert is sounded when you return to within 50 meters (150ft) of the trip start point. This is to remind you that you should probably stop recording the trip. You can silence this alert for 10 minutes by tapping the red warning message at the top of the Map page. Each successive tap adds another 10 minutes of silence. If your trip will continue past the start point (for instance, if you are running laps) the alert will silence when you are again more than 50 meters from the start.

4. If you have enabled Placemark Proximity Alerts then an alert will be sounded when you approach one of your placemarks. You can silence this alert by acknowledging the popup window. Otherwise the alert is auto cancelled when you arrive at the placemark. Alerts can be permanently disabled for a placemark by tapping it and selecting "Edit" from the popup options.

5. If you have enabled Standby-Start and you start a trip while GPS accuracy is poor then you will hear a warning buzzer. The buzzer will repeat each minute until GPS accuracy improves enough so that Trail Boss can start recording, at which time a bell is sounded.

All alerts are silenced when you pause the trip recording.

You can permanently silence these alerts by selecting 'Shut Sounds Off' under the 'Barometer, Sounds, Screen' option on Trail Boss's Settings page.
