Why does the measure tool sometimes not show elevation stats?

When using the measure tool to measure the distance between 2 points, the distance, heading, elevation change and slope angle between the 2 points are shown.
The elevation change and slope angle are obtained from an internet server. It can take a few seconds for this to happen so there is usually a small delay before it is shown.
If you don't have an internet connection the elevation stats are not shown.
