Can I use Trail Boss without an internet connection?

Yes.

Trail Boss normally updates its maps from an internet server as your trip progresses. If you are going somewhere where internet will not be available then you must pre-download the map for that area. Trail Boss will be fully functional using the downloaded map even when you are offline.

To download a map:
  1. Select the map type in the settings page.
  2. Pan/zoom the map so that the area you want to download is visible.
  3. Select the download button (cloud image) near the bottom of the map page.
  4. Use the download window to select the exact area to download.
  5. Choose the maximum zoom level for the download.
  6. The download will commence, % complete is shown on the download button.
  7. When the download completes the downloaded area is indicated on the map with a magenta box.
  8. When you are ready to use the map offline:
    1. There is a small Info button at the bottom right corner of the magenta box. Tap it.
    2. Select 'Use This Downloaded Map'
    3. The map within the box can be used when you are offline.
    4. When you are back online, tap the info button and select 'Stop Using This Download'
Trail Boss uses Mapbox maps. Mapbox charges a fee to download maps and so Trail Boss limits the amount of map data you can download each month. Subscribers have a much higher limit. Use your monthly allowance wisely by only downloading the areas that you need, and choosing an appropriate zoom level. Zoom level has a large effect on the amount of map data that is downloaded. Try zoom level 12 if all you need is an overview of a large area with reasonable detail. For smaller areas with high detail try zoom 14.

The maps in ‘More Maps’ can also be downloaded. These are not Mapbox maps and so they are not subject to Mapbox download limits. But you should still select as small an area and zoom level as possible. This will reduce the time it takes to download and the amount of phone memory used by the download.
