What is barometric altitude calibration all about?

We recommend using the phone's built-in barometer for altitude information. Your climb and descent totals will be much more accurate when using the barometer. The barometer is enabled by selecting 'Use Barometer For Altitude' under the 'Barometer, Sounds, Screen' option in Trail Boss's Settings page.

When this setting is enabled Trail Boss will automatically set the barometric altitude to the GPS altitude at the start of each trip. We call this 'calibrating barometric altitude'. The barometric altitude will be re-calibrated periodically during the trip when GPS altitude accuracy is high.

If you are concerned that automatic calibration will not be good enough for your needs, you can select Manual Barometer Calibration. You will be prompted to enter the known elevation at your location at the start of each trip. You may recalibrate at any time during the trip by long pressing the ''Baro Elevation' dashboard item. Mountaineers who are used to carrying an altimeter will be familiar with this process.
